Understanding that the word ‘Moomba' itself is a Koori word meaning “getting together and having fun”, the marriage of the parade with water - the essence of life, and to some a symbol of the journey taken over water to reach their new homeland, Australia – is inevitable. Drawing upon Melbourne's unique cultural heritage – often thought of as the city of arrivals – the crowd was entertained by more than 300 artists from the many communities of Melbourne – Greek, Italian, Afghani, Korean, Indonesian, Chinese, Pacific Islander, Palestinian, Brazilian, Sudanese, Indian and Maori cultures were represented, to name but a few!
